The Mighty Have Fallen. Don’t Join their Ranks.

May 24, 2018 By Daniel Im

My heart is heavy as I write this.

Although we’re all sinful and broken, seeing the mighty fall is painful, heart wrenching, and incredibly sobering.

It makes me want to throw up.

Especially when it involves individuals in the faith who have gone ahead of us, paved the way, ministered locally and globally, and seemed to be living a life of faithfulness to the Lord.

I guess God wanted to shine the light and reveal what was hidden.

And this time, he didn’t use a flashlight; he went for the jugular and used those outdoor flood lights you see at baseball fields.

This declaration by the prophet Daniel seems to be quite fitting for this time,

May the name of God
be praised forever and ever,
for wisdom and power belong to him.
He changes the times and seasons;
he removes kings and establishes kings.
He gives wisdom to the wise
and knowledge to those
who have understanding.
He reveals the deep and hidden things;
he knows what is in the darkness,
and light dwells with him.

(Daniel 2:20-22, CSB)

Jesus puts it another way,

For nothing is concealed that won’t be revealed, and nothing hidden that won’t be made known and brought to light. (Luke 8:17, CSB)

Though sin might feel like a personal thing that you can hide, it will eventually come to light.

the full story – Michael Guglielmucci’s Deception

September 7, 2008 By Daniel Im

Almost a month ago, Michael Guglielmucci, a pastor in Australia who had written and sung “Healer” on the latest Hillsong album, came out and confessed that he had been living a life of deception.  For the past two years, he had deceived everyone, his wife and parents included, and told them that he had terminal cancer.

When I first heard what had happened, I went into absolute shock and I began grieving.  I couldn’t understand how he could do such a thing – especially as a pastor and a follower of Christ.  And how could he lie like that to his wife and to his parents? However, I resisted the urge to blog about it and tell everyone until I heard the full story.

Here is the full story and statement of confession.

Here is also an exclusive interview (video) where Guglielmucci came out and made a public statement,

what exactly is sin?

July 24, 2008 By Daniel Im

Sin – you’ve probably heard the word before, but what is your definition of it?

According to Oxford dictionary, sin is “an immoral act considered to be a transgression against divine law.”

If you go to Church, sin is typically defined as “disappointing God,” or “disobeying God,” or “breaking his rules.”

This is what Soren Kierkegaard in Sickness onto Death says,
“Sin is building your identity on anything but God.”

But what exactly does that mean? In short, we all have people, things, reputations, etc. that we feel like we need to have. For example, a certain job, a specific title, a specific type of girlfriend/boyfriend, etc.

We all have things that we feel like we need to have.

However what happens when we actually get those things? Timothy Keller says that “you’ll be[come] enslaved to it.” Furthermore, “when you actually get it, it won’t actually satisfy the hole in your heart, and if in anyway you fail it, it’ll curse you for the rest of your life.”

Consequently, rather than considering sin as breaking a set of rules, what if we began viewing sin in the same way Soren Kierkegaard does? “Sin is building your identity on anything but God.”

What would change?

Here’s another question – How do you view sin
